2025 | Rethinking Design for Accessibility
Sierra Campbell

In January 2025, Sierra delivered a presentation to the OKACTE Communications and Marketing Division titled “Accessibility in Action.” This session introduced CareerTech marketing professionals to the key principles of WCAG 2.1 AA standards, with a focus on preparing for the April 2026 federal compliance deadline. But more than compliance, Sierraframed accessibility as a tool for equity—making the case that inclusive design directly supports CareerTech’s mission to serve all learners and community members. The presentation addressed how users with disabilities—including those with visual impairments, dyslexia, ADHD, color blindness, and motor challenges—interact with digital and print content. She offered concrete examples of how design decisions can either create or remove barriers. To extend the impact beyond a single session, Sierra created an accessibility style guide that lives in the shared OKACTE Communications & Marketing Division folder. The guide includes:* A curated selection of accessible color combinations with HEX and RGB codes.* Recommended fonts and layout principles for readability and clarity.* Inclusive design tips that are easy to apply, even for non-designers.This project was entirely self-initiated—developed outside of her regular duties—to meet a growing need within the CareerTech system. Sierra noticed that many professionals wanted to make their work more accessible but lacked the time or training to dig into WCAG guidelines. Her guide bridges that gap, turning complex requirements into practical, everyday tools. The guide is already being used by professionals across the state, and because it’s stored in a shared drive, it remains accessible as a living resource that others can reference and build upon.

Sierra’s work reflects a strong and sustained contribution to the CareerTech community. Rather than focusing solely on her own institution, she created tools for the benefit of theentire OKACTE Communications and Marketing Section, helping teams statewide integrate accessibility into their core practices.By presenting directly to colleagues, sharing expertise, and developing a resource for long-term use, Sierra is actively shaping how accessibility is understood and prioritized acrossOklahoma CareerTech. She also serves as an informal point of contact for peers who have follow-up questions or want to deepen their understanding of inclusive design.
